“Command and Conquer: Renegade†is unique in that it is the only title of the “Command and Conquer†series that is a first-person shooter. In multiplayer, teams are divided between the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the Brotherhood of Nod. Players must defend their base as well as obliterate the enemy. Games are won in one of three ways: (1) having the highest point total (points are accumulated by harvesting minerals, damaging the opponents’ base, and by kills), (2) destroying the enemy base, or, if the server permits, (3) placing the superweapon beacon in the other team’s base.
Seven free map packs are available for download, each with several maps to play. Between the GDI and the Nod, there are 11 vehicles, 28 character classes and 23 weapons to choose from. Your choices range from support to demolition, so many different strategies can be implemented.
The most important aspect to remember about “Renegade†is that it is, at its core, a team game. Groups of two or more will be more effective at taking down the enemy base. Support classes, like the engineer, are extremely valuable to the team, but are also extremely vulnerable. Assisting and defending your support players will prove to be a more successful strategy than going out on your own.
For fans of the series, “Renegade†is an intriguing addition to the “Command and Conquer†universe.
