Description:
RecWar (LAN-enabled shoot 'em up) RecWar (short for Recreational Warfare) is a multiplayer only freeware game. It supports up to four players on a LAN. Up to 64 vehicles can be on the map at once, with extra positions filled with computer-controlled bots. There are three modes: Team War, Deathmatch, and Capture the Cow (similar to Capture the Flag mode in other games).
RecWar is a shoot 'em up with a top-down viewpoint. Graphics are rather primitive; comparable to a Flash game.
Each player pilots one of three vehicles. In order from the slowest (and easiest to steer) to the fastest, they are the tank, the hummer, and the hovercraft. All vehicles are armed with eight different weapons, with unlimited ammo. Most impressive is the BFG. It can destroy multiple enemies at once , but its power is offset by its long recharge time. One remarkable weapon is the Land Mine, which is useful in throwing off pursuers when you're capturing a cow.
Seventeen maps are included in the package, and a free map editor makes it easy to build more.
If you like top-down shooters, I would recommend giving RecWar a try. After all, free is free, right? But be aware that the installer doesn't automatically create a desktop icon or an entry in your Start menu. Navigate to the C:RecWar directory to find it.
