Only four players can play Doom 3 at once. However, the gaming community soon saw fit to produce a mod which boosted the number of players to eight or sixteen. The game developers themselves soon followed suit in their Resurrection of Evil expansion, which boosted the possible number of players up to eight officially.
The game has four modes available in multiplayer mode. These remain the same whether it is a lan game or four people using the split screen option. The first mode mimics most other types of games and is sometimes called the slayer option. Basically, players collect weapons and ammo while killing the other players for a specified duration, eventually, the player with the most kills wins. The second mode involves a team option for the same game. Then there is an elimination mode which limits the number of respawns players have. This means that the last man standing comes off winner, whether he killed anyone or not. The final mode introduced gives the option for a tournament which leaves the other players sitting out while players take turns dueling in the arena. Once one player dies, the next player is spawned and they duel. Eventually, the winner comes out as the player who hasn's lost, while a second contender who has lost only once duels him for the final title. In the Resurrection of Evil expansion, game developers added a two player cooperative mode as well.
