Half-Life 2 did not initially ship with an out-of-box multiplayer component, except for the bundled Counter-Strike: Source mod. However, a few weeks later, developer Valve Software released a deathmatch component for Half-Life 2 known as Half-Life 2: Deathmatch (HL2DM).
HL2DM needs to be downloaded and launched through Valve’s Steam client to play online or over LAN. All players on the LAN with their own copy of HL2DM should be able to find the host game servers under the LAN tab.
The objective of HL2DM is to have the most kills, or “frags”, by the end of a match. Frags are earned by killing enemy players by using guns and other weapons in free-for-all combat.
HL2DM currently comes with 7 maps that feature the same graphical fidelity as single-player Half-Life 2. All of HL2’s weapons are available, plus the exclusive SLAM remote tripmine and even the Gravity Gun!
The maximum player limit for HL2DM games can be modified by editing the server.cfg file. The major limitation here is the hardware the server is running on. Games with more players require more powerful hardware.
The most fun of HL2DM probably comes from the physics engine. The physics creates a sense of chaos with blasts randomly propelling objects at dangerous velocities and by being able to use the Gravity Gun to pick up objects in the environment and launch them at your friends!
