Hail to the King, Baby! - 1996 released its still one of the coolest Computergame ever! The LAN Mode offers Deathmatch and a great COOP Mode.
Enjoy the short tutorial for playing Duke as network game....
How do i play Duke 3d witht Windows (2000/XP):
I tried to make this tutorial very simple:
Its very easy to play Duke, we use a opensource "port" to play the game with Windows. Everything you need is the DUKE3D.GRP (from the original CD), this file contains the gameplot.
So at all we need two files:
- DUKE3D.GRP (from the original Duke3D CD) - Install file from JonoF's Duke Nukem 3D Port (JFDuke3D) DOWNLOAD HERE(only 800KB freeware)
I dont have a Duke3D.grp file?:
If you dont have a Duke3D CD you can try it with the shareware. (SHAREWARE)
1. Step:
Execute the downloaded file (from JFDuke3D) and install it (its a standard Setup).
2. Step:
Activate the checkbox "execute GRP Installer" and finish the setup. Choose your DUKE3D.GRP at the popupwindow and click "next". Thats all, the good old Duke3D is installed!
3.Step:
START -> PROGRAMS -> JFDuke3D -> SETUP
Here you can make your game-settings, change your video resolution and (very important) choose your sound! Save the settings and now you can start the game with:
(START -> PROGRAMS -> JFDuke3D -> JFDuke3D
So ...."What are you waitung for...!"
Multiplayer - How to play in LAN (network):
Playing Duke3D with JFDuke3D im LAN is a little bit tricky..
So i made an example "game" with 3 players:
Step 1:
All players start the game from the commandline. Go to Start->Run and type CMD in the field and press ENTER.
First of all change to your duke folder with:
cd C:\YOURDUKEFOLDER\JFDuke3D
Step 2:
One of the players has to open the game as "server", he starts (in the dukefolder) with:
duke3d.exe /net /n0:3
The 3 stands for 3 players -> The server is now open and waits for connections from the other players.
Looks like this:

Â
The other players use this command to start (again in the duke folder): duke3d.exe /net /n0 192.168.x.x
192.168.x.x means the IP adress from the server. Step 3:
The game starts automaticly and at the entrance-screen everybody has to press ENTER.
IMPORTANT: Only the "server-player" goes to NEW GAME, makes the game-settings and presses START GAME -> all players are now together in one game.
Setupscreen:

After starting the game you can play together :) Here two ingame screenshots :
Having a tad problem maybe someone can help regarding playing lan line intra network games. I followed all instructions above and the games works great by itself (have the CD)
I got to as far as setting up the game in the CMD command, but when I try to set one of the computers as server, I get two boxes that appear. One is the jfduke box image above (without the startup info or the waiting for players text) and another box that pops up above that (with an ok button if pressed closes everything). So in other words, the server doesnt load up correctly I guess.
Part II, if that problem is resolved, where specifially do I find the Server IP address?
1) The problem you have with two windows appearing is because in front of /net and /n0:3 there is a space.
2) To find the server IP address you go into CMD on the server computer and type in "ipconfig". It should be in the first paragraph. After that you can replace 192.168.x.x with the servers IP address.
Another thing you can do is create a shortcut insstead of always typing in CMD. Just right-click and create a new shortcut and then paste in what you would type into CMD.
Example "C:\duke\JFDuke3D\duke3d.exe /net /n0:3"
To add on the above, the grey box that appears over when launching after typing in duke3d.exe/net...etc is the command line help with text. Do I have to download all 4 files from the JoFo site or just the 1st one?
PLease help! Playing Lan games really kicks ass and I miss playing!
Would you happen to know why the game launches with only two players even though the server is set to host 3 players? The game launches right away, leaving the 3rd player waiting (in the JFDuke pop up box) and never being able to launch with the other two (the server computer is set to n:03)
Game works great but even better if I can solve this issue.
i downloaded duke the other week cos i wanna play online with it and lan, but i have no idea how too. i got it working on single player just fine. I run Windows Vista and need some help, please help a newbie for both internet and LAN! :)
After 15 years I'm back playing Duke and I want to share the meaning of "Come Get Some!" with my 12 year old son. I had no trouble setting up a LAN game using the command prompt, but when the game launches, I only get the generic maps from the SP game to choose from. 15 years ago I made a bunch of MP user maps that I would love to play again with my son. But the option of choosing a user map is "blued" out in the setup menu for launching the game. Does anyone know how make the user maps available in a LAN game? Thanks for your help!
